The Red Road goes along the Puna coast from Kalapana to Kapoho. The coastline here is some of the most spectacular and pristine in Hawai’i. Between the narrow, winding roads and the gorgeous views, it makes it very difficult to drive! Sometimes whales can be seen as you stroll down the road. Strangers that drive by usually wave and even though it’s the main road for this area, there’s never anything that can be called traffic. The road is not really red, but was made out of red cinders before it was paved with asphalt. Some of the cinders can still be seen along much of the sides of the road. Much of the Red Road was destroyed in the 2018 eruption.
