To me, the most beautiful place I’ve ever been is Hanalei Bay, Kauai. It is the oldest of the main islands and heavily eroded. It is what the other islands will someday each in turn become.

My favorite part of the island is the north shore, which is much more lush and has more spectacular mountains than other parts of the island. Poipu, with less rain, draws most of the tourists, and is somewhere I only needed to stay once. Kauai is not large, and you can drive from one end to the other in 2 hours. Because it is an old island, there are dozens of gorgeous beaches.

The photos here run counter-clockwise from the end of the road on the north-western part of the island at the Kalalau Valley overlook, all the way to the also north-western part of the island 2 miles into the Kalalau trail at Hanakapiai Beach.
